I saw the Fag Bug!

I had read about the fag bug recently over on feministing.com but didn't realize Erin Davies (owner of the car) was from Albany. I saw the Volkswagen in all of it's rainbow wonderfulness pulling out of a diner parking lot while I was visiting relatives upstate last weekend.

Of course, I acted like a crazed paparazzi and turned around in the middle of the street to get a picture of the thing.

Last year, Davies' did not remove hateful slurs "fag" and "u r gay," which had been spray painted on the hood and window of her car, as a way to start a conversation and raise awareness around homophobia. The Volkswagen folks heard about what she was doing and gave her car the sweet paint job you see above.

I think that by living in and around Boston it can be easy to forget how much blatant hate and general ignorance is out there, which is part of what makes this project so important. In Davies' words (as reported on Feministing):

"Fag Bug has become much more than when it started. And to be able to transform it into something positive, rather than have people look at my car and be upset and hurt, I'd rather they look and see how bright the colors are, see something fun and playful instead of something hurtful."

You can read more about fag bug and read Davies' blog here. A documentary on fag bug is expected out this fall.

aha, i saw the fagbug too! me, my two cousins, and my cousins girlfriend were pulling out of great northern mall in clay, new york after watching a movie and eating dinner. we started laughing at the fact that there was a rainbow colored car driving around, and then we noticed the words "fagbug" on the left side while it was stopped beside us. i took a picture on my phone, and then noticed the "www.fagbug.com" also printed on it. now i understand why someone was driving the bug around proudly.

Ironically enough, about 3 months ago, I realized that I work within miles of what I'm now assuming is Erins home, as it has been parked in a residential driveway many times on my drive home. I wasn't able to see the URL on the car, so I just assumed it was someone asserting their gay pride in a rather different way. I work almost an hour away from where I live, and on the way home tonight I noticed the fagbug at my local Target and saw the URL this time. I was suprised to see her all the way out in my neck of the woods, but I hope that what she is doing helps others come to terms with the fact that we all are differnt.
